Give Yourself a Haircut

Give Yourself a Haircut

Give Yourself a Haircut

Looking for more even more ways to save money?  Have you ever considered giving yourself a haircut?

Money Saving Breakdown – Give Yourself a Haircut

  • Difficulty (Super Easy/Easy/Medium/Hard/Expert): Hard
  • Average Savings per Year ($/year): 84
  • Time Required (mins): 5
  • Savings for your time ($/hr): 1,008

How to Give Yourself a Haircut

OK, so in most cases you aren’t going to actually be giving yourself a haircut.  This is more of a do-it-with-a-friend versus do-it-yourself.  If you have a lot of hair, it would be pretty hard to cut it properly by yourself unless you’re taking a razor to it.  What you’ll need is a friend, family member, or spouse to cut your hair using clippers and/or scissors.  I’ve found that clippers are literally a frugal person’s best friend!  Here’s what I got a long while ago to help trim my beard Philips Norelco Trimmer.  I think when we got ours it was only like $30 though…  Generally, any type of clippers will do, but I find the rechargable one more convenient and less restrictive.  Up to you…

Now, whenever I go to get a haircut I always get a 5 on the top and a 1 on the side.  The haircut place then proceeds to charge me $12 (plus $2 tip) for about 10 minutes of actual hair cutting seat time.  If you take the time involved in the whole trip from your home to the haircut place and back again, the whole process takes about 1-hour.

Since I’ve started MoneyAhoy, I’m looking for all kinds of ways to save money – both large and small.  I figured what the hell, if they can cut my hair in about 10 minutes, it can’t be that hard.  My wife should be able handle this task with ease!

A Word of Caution – Give Yourself a Haircut

Two words of caution actually.  Make sure you trust the person cutting your hair 🙂  My wife had never really cut hair before, but I trusted she would take her time and give it her best shot.  Worse case scenario, I could just get a buzz cut if she completely botched things up.  The second word of caution is that the 5 on the beard trimmer doesn’t match up with the 5 they use at the haircut place!!!  The 5 on a beard trimmer is MUCH, MUCH shorter.  Unfortunately, we found this out AFTER getting started 🙂  Lucky for me, everything came out well on the first try.  I can thank my wife for that 🙂

Anyways, I hope you consider giving it a try if you’re looking to save some money.  I marked this tip as hard because it does take a little leap of faith to go through with it, but after you make the decision you’ll actually be saving time over heading to the haircut place.  I think we’ll be cutting my hair this way from here on out as it will save a bunch of money and time!  Also, if it ever does get screwed up accidentally it will make for a great conversation starter!

We do this all the time with my husbands hair. We are not talented enough to do the rat of our family cause we are girls.

      Cansada,

Does rat = rest? Yes, I think I would be a little more hesitant if I were cutting girls hair as a mistake will take longer to be undone!

We used to try this but after a while gave up. I guess we should have invested in a proper and professional clipper that wont mess up the hair.

      Afz,

You gotta have something halfway decent to have a better chance of success. I’ve also used the $20 dog grooming clippers that are plug-in and they work fine.

Many, many moons ago, I was a licensed cosmetologist, so I always cut Rick’s hair, and our 4 kids’ hair as well. This year we’ve vowed to step up the frugal in our house, so I’ve been cutting my own hair as well. It’s a bit on the tough side, but if I put enough curls in no one can notice the mistakes. 🙂

With four kids I’m sure you saved a ton of money by doing it yourself. That must be really tricky cutting your own hair! I’ve tried it before and it looked like my head met with the wrong end of a lawnmower!!

Huh, this is something I would be fearful of trying! There is the learning to cut the hair part and doing it well enough that it looks like a professional job at work…that might be a great impendiment.
I do agree though thats its a fun way to save money and certainly bond with family if one has the guts and know-how to try it out.

Yes, it was definitely a small bonding experience between my wife and me. I gave up a ton of control and put my trust in her hands. It was pretty cool, and I’m glad it turned out OK 🙂
