It can be stocks, CD’s, even a house over a few decades all lose value to inflation. I do agree that the stock market is probably one of the best ways to combat the effects of inflation, better than real estate too.

Many people don’t realize that they are “losing” money by putting all of their money in interest bearing bank accounts. While there is a place and a need for that money, if you put all of your money there you are losing money to inflation and are guaranteeing that you won’t be able to afford retirement.

I do think that in order to beat inflation for the long term, everyone needs to be invested in the stock market! Otherwise, keeping all that money in a savings account will yield about 0.02% at best! Last year, my 401-K grew almost 11% – sweet! If it averages around 7-8% at best, I’m sure to keep up and beat inflation for the long haul. If all of our investments do this, well – we should be in for a nice little retirement 🙂 Thanks for the great finance lesson today!
